Machame Route Overview

The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” begins on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro and can be completed in 6 to 7 days. Known for its stunning scenery, it is a popular choice among photographers and nature lovers. The route follows a “hike high, sleep low” strategy, enhancing acclimatization and making it a favorable option for climbers. Throughout the journey, climbers transition from lush forests to moorland and glacier areas, showcasing the diverse landscapes of Kilimanjaro. The adventure concludes at the Mweka Gate, marking the end of a memorable trek.

The Machame Route with Ahsante Tours offers an exceptional Kilimanjaro trekking experience, boasting an impressive 95% summit success rate—the highest among all Kilimanjaro routes. This success is attributed to its well-planned itinerary that emphasizes effective acclimatization through the renowned “hike high, sleep low” strategy, ensuring trekkers adjust gradually to the altitude. Ahsante Tours’ expertise and commitment to safety make the Machame Route the ideal choice for adventurers aiming to conquer Africa’s highest peak with confidence.

Half an hour drive from Moshi lies the gate to the Machame route, where you will complete park registrations, then you are off on your 6-day trek. The first section of the route climbs steadily and passes through magnificent, dense rainforest. This path is less well-trodden so it can get somewhat overgrown in places and it is often wet and muddy underfoot.

Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and finally reach camp. The day has been spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but we have followed the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to aid your body’s acclimatization to altitude.

After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.

We start off at around midnight, and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest.

Excellent 2 weeks in tanzania!! Definitely go with Ashante!! A very challenging but incredibly rewarding week climbing Kilimanjaro and then going on Safari. Could not have asked for a better team to have summited the mountain with. Many thanks to our guides Arden, Brian, Jackson and Ramson for their support and entertainment along the way and for keeping us motivated. The food prepared for us by Omari, Benjamin and team was outstanding. Everyone in our crew was a real character and made the experience on the mountain and on the Safari afterwards very fun and safe at the same time. I learnt so much from the staff that went with us and can't wait to return to Tanzania with this company again in the future. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a challenge with a great group of people and guides. Thank you to Nelly and team for seamlessly sorting all transfers and logistics. We were very well looked after!

Amazing experience climbing Mt Kilimanjaro! I had an absolutely amazing time with Ahsante tours and they made my dream of reaching the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro come true! Our chief guide Arden was brilliant, providing detailed briefings every evening to prepare us for each day, while constantly encouraging and supporting our entire group, ensuring every single one of us made it to the top! The assistant guides Ramson, Brian and Jackson were super, as they provided continuous support, fun and laughter making my experience unforgettable. Of course, there is a whole team of porters, waiters, chefs who were absolutely crucial in the success of my trip and they were all incredible from start to finish. I can’t recommend this company enough, and I was so sad to leave the crew but thank you to everyone from Ahsante tours!

Absolutely FANTASTIC! The Ahsante Tours and Safaris team is absolutely outstanding! They hosted a group of 8 people from Global Partners in Hope in Omaha, Nebraska, on an 8-day climb of Kilimanjaro. Every single detail from planning the trip, to executing the climb was handled thoroughly and professionally. The attentiveness, care, and attention to details provided by the entire Ahsante team was absolutely stellar. Our group of travelers have raved about their experience of reaching the "roof of Africa" since their return. Aside from the gorgeous scenery and the thrilling experience, what the team has remarked about the most were the people that accompanied and supported them throughout the climb. Our man thanks to Holyfield, Nilesh, K-Dawg, Bruno, Emanuel, Victor, Ludo, Mike, Albert, and so many more that made this dream a reality for the GPiH team!

Amazing experience The tour combined Safari and visit to a Maasai tribe, a coffee plantation and the waterfalls. We added the balloon and it was so worth it! Our guides Joseph Gamma and Derick Richard did an AMAZING job at making our experience unforgettable. Thanks to them we were able to spot animals from super close, learned all the fun facts about them and understand Tanzania from the perspective of the locals, always feeling safe and well taken care of. Thanks to them , I want to return to Africa!

Amazing Safari in Tanzania! Our safari in Tanzania with Ashante Tours was truly unforgettable. From the very beginning, we were welcomed with such warmth and kindness that we immediately felt at home. The guides Joseph Gamma and Derick Richard were exceptional, knowledgeable, passionate, and always eager to share insights about the wildlife and surroundings, which made every moment even more meaningful. We were incredibly fortunate to see all the animals we had hoped for and even more, turning every day into a new adventure. The entire experience was seamless, exciting, and deeply enriching. We are so grateful for the care, professionalism, and genuine hospitality we received. It was, without a doubt, an amazing experience that we will cherish forever. Recomended a 100 % . Ahsante Tours Kilimanjaro Climb My son and I have just completed the Lemosho 8 Day climb of Kilimanjaro with Ahsante Tours. We had an amazing adventure, led by our superb guides Lawrence and Amos. So helpful and encouraging, with Lawrence also proving to be an excellent language, geography and history teacher! Despite catching the start of the rainy season, we only had to get our wet weather gear out on 3 of the 8 days. The whole crew were friendly, and definitely contributed to our effort. The porters do a super human effort. We arranged for the portable toilet - essential in our view as your guts are not normal on the climb, and the long drop toilets at the campsites are a no go zone. Summit success after 6 hours of climbing at a pole pole, slowly slowly, pace. No one told us about the agony of getting back down the mountain. Legs and toes extremely sore! We thoroughly recommend Ahsante Tours as a mid budget, local tour company. Our guides had been with the company for 15 and 10 years, which says a lot. Holyfield did an awesome job as the tour organiser, right from the start when we had to postpone our climb for 12 months. Asante sana Ahsante Tours! Tutaonana Baadaye!

*Highly Recommend* Everyone of the team are amazing and play their part in making a memorable trip. Easy to recommend when things go well, sadly bad health meant it didn’t go to plan for me - this is when I saw the very best of the team. Caring, helpful and organised, everything I needed a more.

A fantastic bespoke safari tour I can highly recommend Ashante Tours. Holyfield arranged a bespoke safari tour for us which surpassed our expectations. The variety of parks and animals we saw was breathtaking. Lovely lodges and an excellent guide to accompany us made the whole experience smooth and relaxing. Thank you Ashante Tours

Why choose Ahsante Tours

The Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a more challenging yet rewarding experience for climbers, with diverse landscapes and breathtaking views.

The Machame Route typically takes 6 to 7 days to complete. The additional day is often recommended to aid in acclimatization and improve summit success rates.

The Machame Route has a high summit success rate of around 95%, making it one of the most successful routes for climbers. This is largely due to its "hike high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy.

The Machame Route is a camping route, meaning climbers sleep in tents at designated campsites throughout the journey. Ahsante Tours provides all camping gear, including tents and sleeping arrangements.

The route is known for its diverse and stunning scenery. It begins in lush rainforests, passes through moorland and alpine deserts, and offers spectacular views of glaciers as you approach the summit.

As one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro, the Machame Route can be busy during peak climbing seasons. However, its scenic beauty and high success rate still make it a top choice for climbers.
